ITIN

ITIN is the abbreviation for Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. This number acts as a kind of SSN (Social Security Number). It is possible to do many transactions with this number given by the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The most important of these is to be able to file taxes with an ITIN.

What is an ITIN Number?

People who are not eligible to receive an SSN in the US must obtain an ITIN. The most important reason for this is to file federal tax returns. This number is also important for complying with US tax laws.

An ITIN is a 9-digit number given to each person by the IRS. Of course, this number has some uses other than tax returns. For example, people who earn income in the US in some way are required to obtain an ITIN if they are not citizens. In addition, it is possible to perform various financial transactions with this number.

What is an ITIN used for? What is Its Purpose?

Although the IRS ITIN does not directly replace the SSN, it allows you to perform many transactions. The first of these is undoubtedly filing taxes. In addition, the Individual Taxpayer ID Number can also perform the following transactions:

  • ITIN can be used to get a tax refund.
  • You can also use it to benefit from some tax deductions or credits.
  • This number may be required, especially to get a mortgage loan.
  • Similarly, it is possible to make transactions with this number when getting a personal loan.
  • A TIN is required to open a bank account in the USA.

Some US banks support you to get a loan with your taxpayer number. However, unfortunately, some large banks only allow transactions and applications with an SSN. For this, it would be better to apply to local financial institutions or banks.

Another important point you need to know at this point is that the Individual Taxpayer Identification Number cannot replace the SSN. In other words, it is not possible to get a work permit with a TIN. Likewise, you cannot benefit from social assistance.

Who Can Get an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number?

You don’t have to meet a lot of criteria to get this number. People who can’t get an SSN can get numbers issued by the IRS, like TINs. So if your status is one of the following, you can apply to the IRS:

  • Non-US citizens
  • People who are not authorized to work in the US
  • People who are not US citizens but come to the country for education
  • People who are investing in real estate
  • People who are waiting to complete their US citizenship acquired through marriage

How to Get an ITIN Number in the USA?

The ITIN application is one of the services provided by the Internal Revenue Service. You will also need to apply here for the EIN application.

The first thing you need to do to get a TIN is to fill out the W 7 Form completely. The questions on the form include identity information, address and application purpose. It is especially important to provide detailed and accurate information about the application’s purpose.

Then, you can submit the form to the IRS along with the other documents requested from you. You can choose one of three different application methods to do this:

  • Application by Mail: You can mail Form W-7 and other documents to the Internal Revenue Service, ITIN Operation, P.O. Box 149342, Austin, TX 78714-9342 USA.
  • Application by Acceptance Agent: Companies like ein-itin.com can make your application reliably and quickly. This method is one of the most guaranteed and fastest methods.
  • Individual Application: If you wish, you can also apply on your own by going to the IRS. To do this, you must hand-deliver all the documents in full. In other words, for individual applications, you will definitely need to apply while in the US.

How Many Days Does It Take to Get an ITIN?

After you complete the application, the IRS will send you a letter of acceptance. This letter can take an average of 7 weeks to arrive. However, if you are in a busy application period, you may have to wait 10-12 weeks. Therefore, it is important to submit all documents without delaying the process. If your first application is unsuccessful, you will need to resubmit the documents.

Does ITIN Expire?

TIN numbers expire if they have not been used for 3 years. This essentially means that the number is in passive status. The next step is to renew the application. This can also be done through the Internal Revenue Service.
