What does FEIN mean?

FEIN stands for Federal Employer Identification Number. It is a nine-digit identification number assigned by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for tax purposes to business entities operating in the United States. FEIN is used to identify a business entity and is often required for various tax returns, such as income tax returns, employment tax returns, and certain business transactions.

FEIN is also known as an Employer Identification Number (EIN) and serves a similar purpose for businesses to an individual’s Social Security Number (SSN). It is used to track business entities for tax reporting and compliance purposes. Required for businesses that have employees, operate as a partnership or corporation, or have other tax liabilities under U.S. tax law.

What is the difference between an EIN and a FEIN?

All business types that meet the requirements need an Employer Identification Number (EIN Number). An EIN (also known as a Federal Employer Identification Number, or FEIN) is issued by the IRS. In business tax returns, business tax accounts, and tax-related subjects EIN is required for all documents. At the same time, many banks, financial institutions, and credit card companies may request an EIN.

A federal employment identification number (FEIN) is the same thing as an employer identification number (EIN Number). The only exception to this rule is when someone uses the abbreviation EIN Number to refer to their state tax identification number.

Some states require a separate state tax identification number; other states use the Federal Tax ID number.

EIN Number verification letter

When you first receive an EIN Number, the IRS sends you an EIN Confirmation Letter (CP 575).

If you got your EIN Number online, you can download CP 575.

If your EIN is received by mail or fax, the IRS will mail you a CP 575. This will be mailed to the address you list on Forms 4a and 4b of Form SS-4; It takes 4-6 weeks to arrive

The IRS issues the EIN Confirmation Letter (CP 575) only once.

“CP” means the letter was automatically generated by a computer. This means it cannot be recreated. If the EIN letter is lost, an EIN Verification Letter (147C) is issued by the IRS.
